From the temple garden down by the kohila (an edible plant grown in Sri Lanka) bushes, father cuts kohila every two or three months, enough to last for about a week. During those few days, at least five times, the kohila sambol made with crushed chili never fails. Everyone at home likes it that much. In the early morning, along with my life-savers, I went down into the pits, bearing the carelessness of someone who had laid sharp-thorned kohila stalks. A few hard pieces of yam that I had cut were put into the stream and cleaned along the way. Oh gosh... these two are playing in the water here. The two are fighting over one piece of shell. Even if someone had dragged me away, these water spirits wouldn’t even notice. The kohila slices should be finely cut and boiled until soft, then minced. After that, soya meat, ginger, garlic, red onion, curry leaves, salt, black pepper, tandoori masala, chili powder, coconut oil, and cumin powder should be added and cooked gently over low heat on banana leaves. Then, a flour mixture should be prepared using the kokis batter base, coated with bread crumbs, and deep-fried in hot oil. The wonderful fried aroma that made the mouth water spread from the kitchen across the yard like a soft breeze. A freshly brewed cup of hot plain tea with a piece of ginger in it and a neatly rolled piece of kohila-made rolls beautifully revealed the fine lines that had formed on Uncle Sumith's face. Except for little brother, the kohila leaves cooked with jackfruit seeds are everyone's favorite. Only if some dried shrimp is added does it become little brother’s favorite too. When picked from the stalk, the taste of the kohila leaves is so rich you can't even tell it's kohila. A small portion of the tender leaves was separated to be fried in seasoned oil and taken instead of papadam. Alongside white rice, dhal, dried fish curry, the usual kohila sambol was also there in between.
