We begin our walk in Downtown Toronto, walking from the Village through the leafy streets of Upper Jarvis. Take in the wonderful Victorian Architecture before crossing into St James Town, Toronto's Modernist High Rise community. St. James Town is a highly diverse, densely populated neighbourhood of 25,000 with a high proportion of newcomers, low-income families, young families, youth, and seniors. Leaving the towers behind, our stroll finally reaches Cabbagetown. The majestic mansions along Jarvis and Sherbourne Streets during the late Victorian era. Historically Cabbagetown was a mix of prosperous streets, middle class houses and workers enclaves, but well before the Depression it slid into decline. Then, in the 1970s and 1980s this large stock of decayed, but largely untouched, Victorian housing was rediscovered and the area was gradually restored. Today it is a village within the city. A walk through the area yields many surprises - secluded alleys, converted workshops and tiny workers cottages share streets with grand homes and coach houses.
