ON THE ROAD WITH MY MOTORCYCLE CLUB VULCAN RIDERS IRELAND The Wild Atlantic Way – Ireland's spectacular coastal route The Wild Atlantic Way, 1600 miles (2600 km) in length, is one of the longest defined coastal route in the world. It winds its way all along the Irish west coast from the Inishowen Peninsula in the north down to the picturesque town of Kinsale, County Cork, in the south. This route from start to finish unfolds the wonders of nature, the power of the ocean and its imprint on the west coast of Ireland, and the stunning countryside in all its diversity. Enchanting villages are nestled along the coast as well as ancient monuments – their origins having long sunk into the mists of oblivion dot the landscape. Behind every bend on this magical coastal road a new delight awaits. The wild Atlantic with its unrestrained and untameable tides and storms has continuously been moulding the west coast of Ireland. With a constant meeting of water and land, a deeply indented and wild terrain has emerged with towering cliffs, spellbinding bays and beaches, mystical islands, always changing and never reaching the end. In the isolation or perhaps expressed in a different way living near and with the Atlantic at your doorstep has ensured that old traditions and the Irish language have been preserved. A trip along the Wild Atlantic Way is also an encounter with the past. RING OF KERRY Is a scenic coastal road, with a length of 179 kilometres, leading around the Iveragh Peninsula in the south west of Ireland. In most parts, the Wild Atlantic Way covers the same route as the Ring, but only the Ring of Kerry passes Killarney National Park. The most stunning landscape that can be found on the Ring of Kerry lies in the deep west of the peninsula – here, Ireland reveals one of its most picturesque landscapes. KERRY CLIFFS The Kerry Cliffs are located at the Skellig Ring, close to Portmagee. A remarkable and impressive panorama presents itself, dominated by the huge cliffs. COOMANASPIG PASS Between Portmagee and St. Finian's Bay, the Wild Atlantic Way passes the Coomanaspig Pass. The ascent and the descent of this mountain pass are both an adventure already – no matter from which direction one comes. During good weather conditions, once the top is reached, a wonderful panorama view on Valentia Island and the Dingle Bay can be enjoyed. WATERVILLE Waterville (An Coireán) is a small coastal village located between the Atlantic Ocean and Lough Currane on the scenic and famous Ring of Kerry along the Wild Atlantic Way. Renowned for its game angling and its 18 hole championship golf links, Waterville is also a paradise for the hill walker, cyclist, pony trekker, ornithologist, astronomer, archaeologist, fishermen, water sport enthusiast and indeed for the general holidaymaker interested in immersing themselves in the REAL Ireland. CHARLIE CHAPLIN STATUE The quiet Irish village of Waterville has been a holiday (British usage) destination for a number of travelers over the years, but none more beloved that silent film comedian Charlie Chaplin who got a statue right in the middle of town, just for vacationing there. Staying at the large Butler Arms Hotel in Waterville Chaplin brought his family to the Irish coastal town on vacation every year for over ten years beginning in 1959. Despite not being Irish, setting any of his films in Ireland, or ever portraying an Irish character, the actor became so beloved by the community during his brief stays, that they finally erected a permanent bronze statue of the man. The statue is even accompanied by a gushing plaque thanking Chaplin for his humble presence. In addition to the statue, the small town now holds a Chaplin film festival each year which has been endorsed by the Chaplin estate. Not a bad remembrance for years of vacations. Peruse our website and get a taste of what Waterville has to offer - and join the many travellers who make Waterville a place to return to, again and again. LADIE'S VIEW The view here is probably the best known of Killarney and is a major attraction for visitors. Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting visited here during the royal visit in 1861. They were so taken with the view that it was named after them. #wildatlanticway #ringofkerry #killarney #letshaveatrip #vrocireland #kerrycliffs #coomanaspigpass #vaterville #ladiesview #skelligring #mollsgap If you like my journeys, please hit that SUBSCRIBE button and we'll see you in the comments!
