Cutaway STORYLINE: The Philippine military on Thursday continued to send troops to the southern island of Basilan where the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf group are holding more than two dozen hostages, including at least two Americans. Soldiers in full battle gear aided by tanks and armoured personnel carriers patrol around the island. The government still has no confirmation on whether the rebels' claim to have beheaded an American hostage is true. In a radio interview on Tuesday, Abu Sayyaf leader Abu Sabaya said his rebels had beheaded Guillermo Sobero, one of three Americans they are holding captive. But soldiers have not found any remains that could confirm his claim. Security remains very tight around Basilan, as a crisis committee meeting was being held among local government officials. Felix Dalugdugan, vice mayor of Lantawan town, where it's thought the hostages are held, said 80 Abu Sayyaf rebels attacked the village of Atong Atong on Wednesday evening but were pushed back by 38 militiamen and eight soldiers. He did not mention casualties. Joel Maturan, mayor of Tipo Tipo town on the southeastern corner of the island, said that last weekend, residents saw the other two American hostages - Gracia and Martin Burnham, a Christian missionary couple - before the alleged beheading of Sobero. The three Americans were seized May 27 while they slept at a southwestern Philippine beach resort. Maturan said the Burnhams appeared in good health and in notably better spirits than in their last sighting. On June 2, the couple and Sobero were seen during a fight between the army and guerrillas. Hostages who escaped during the fight said the Burnhams and Sobero were trembling and fearful. The Chief of the Armed Forces traveled to Basilan on Thursday for a military briefing, attended as well by the Chief of the National Police. But Chief of Police Leandro Mendoza acknowledged that there may be some difficulties for the government troops.
