A company's most valuable asset is its people. If a company loses its best performers because they've been poorly managed, then it has squandered thousands or even millions of dollars (in some cases). It follows that teams who have been well managed should obviously retain more of their top people... and it turns out, research shows this to be true. What's also interesting is that, in companies where engagement surveys show employees are not happy, managers play the biggest role in bringing them back into the fold. If a manager can work with an unhappy employee to identify and solve the underlying problems, they can effect drastic change in just a few short weeks or months. They can give the employee what they need and get them committed again. But if the manager doesn't know how to do this and doesn't really care, then it becomes impossible for anyone else in the company to help them (and for anyone who does try - the employees will quickly lose trust and any understanding at all).
