Built around 1880 and lived in until 1966, it offers a rare insight into traditional Hebridean life on the Isle of Lewis — peat fire, stone walls, thatched roof, and animals kept under the same roof as the family. Although the interior was closed for annual thatching and maintenance, we walk the outside and explain why new housing regulations meant families had to leave homes like this behind. Across the road, we explore the surrounding blackhouse ruins, which help tell the wider story of crofting communities and settlement on Lewis. Next, we stop at a classic Outer Hebrides honesty box — one of many dotted across Lewis and Harris. These little boxes are part of everyday island life and always make a memorable stop for travellers. Then it’s on to one of the most famous landmarks in the Isle of Lewis travel guides: the Whalebone Arch at Bragar. Formed from the jawbones of a Blue Whale that washed ashore in 1920, this striking arch is a true Hebridean icon and one of the most photographed sights in the Outer Hebrides. We plan to grab fish and chips at what’s said to be Scotland’s smallest fish and chip shop, Mollans Takeaway — but the island has other plans. So we park up, make lunch in the van, and share a bit of everyday van life UK, including a surprising historical fact about who once owned the Outer Hebrides.
