Al Held American Abstract Expressionist (1928–2005) Al Held (American, 1928–2005)Al Held was an influential American Abstract Expressionist painter. Widely appreciated for his monumental Hard Edge paintings, his work features abstract, geometric forms existing in a non-Euclidean space, painted in vibrant, fluorescent color. “The best abstract painting transforms its formal qualities into metaphors for truths unavailable to direct perception,” the artist once explained. Held, often working in series, fluctuated between different conceptual styles throughout his long career. His Alphabet paintings, completed between 1961–1966, were vivid concrete abstractions of the letters of the English alphabet. This work notably contrasted stylistically with the pigment paintings he made during the 1950s, which were composed of thick, gestural marks in muted, earthy tones. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY on October 12, 1928, he spent two years serving in the U.S. Navy before enrolling in the Art Students League of New York. Held enjoyed a long and successful career, which included a 20-year tenure as faculty to the Yale University School of Art, a rich exhibition history, and numerous awards. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. He died on July 27, 2005 in Camerata, Italy at the age of 76.
