Watch loads more railway, model railway and travel videos @kartwheelkarl Built in Gorton, Manchester, Beyer-Garratt 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 steam locomotive number 1009 entered traffic for Queensland Railways in 1950. When the 30 locomotives were withdraw just 19 years later, 1009 was chosen as the only member to be preserved, albeit as a static exhibit at The Redlands Steam Locomotive Museum. Following the closure of the Redlands site in 1992, the decision was taken to restore 1009 to operational condition, the locomotive returning to traffic in 1995. The loco became something of a celebrity, operating a variety of tours, including several over The Southern Line 'break of gauge' station of Wallangarra during 1998. The border town station at Wallangarra opened in 1887. It became the transitioning point from the narrow gauge of Queensland to the standard gauge of New South Wales from 1888, when the NSW Main North Railway arrived. Unfortunately, the line from Stanthorpe to Wallangarra was closed permanently following a bush fire in 2023, so it's unlike that a heritage steam train will ever been seen there again. Once again, a big thank you to Roger Morgan for supplying the original footage. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below.
