The Port of Albany, CPKC Kenwood Rail Yard, and the Albany Port Rail Yard I enjoy being a rail fan of sorts. If you have watched my other videos you know I grew up with a desire to watch and ride on trains. I’ve investigated other rail yards in the area and knew I wanted to visit this dual yard and the port in Albany. So, figuring out a Sunday would be the best day to look around, I took time and did an investigation. Looking into the port history I found that in 1924, plans to dredge a deep channel for ocean going vessels were proposed and the dredging being completed in June 1931. The entire “island” was raised nearly 18 feet to dock major ocean freighters. In June 1932, the Port of Albany officially opened. Although lumber, wood, and grain dominated Port shipping in the early years, the shipping of automobiles, fruit and other cargo grew. The D&H and New York Central Railroads laid 25 miles of track to develop the Port. By 1935, six major railroads converged at the Port of Albany which had miles of track of its own. [1] Investigating the CPKC Kenwood Yards we see a major freight yard that takes care of all the freight from the West Albany Yards, or Selkirk Yard which goes north to Canada, Northern New York and Vermont. It used to be owned by the Delaware and Hudson Railroad before the Canadian Pacific acquired it. The yard has a large tank car pipeline that can load or unload from multiple connected tank cars. [2] The line to the north is operated by Canadian Pacific and leads to the Delaware & Hudson main midway between Schenectady and Saratoga Springs. The rail line to the south is owned by CSX and goes to CSX's Selkirk Yard. The line that went west is the former Delaware & Hudson's Albany Main, now abandoned and is the one I walked in on to the when we went into the Port yard. [3] The Port of Albany rail complex is controlled by the Albany Port Railroad that’s serviced by both CSXT off the Port Subdivision and CP (Delaware and Hudson) from Kenwood Yard. The port is operated by Federal Marine Terminals/Albany. The railroad is a loop around the port complex; the southward spur out of the yard is now abandoned. The Albany Port Railroad is jointly owned by the D&H and CSXT (50-50). The Port has two GM switchers and an ex-D&H caboose. [4] Albany Port Railroad has served the Port since 1975 and provides on-site industrial trackage services moving heavy lift and other cargo. Owned and operated by CSX and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), the railroad is near CPKC’s major classification yard at Kenwood Yards, CSX’s major classification yard at Selkirk, and Norfolk Southern’s intermodal facility. [5] “The Albany Port RR uses radio frequency 161.355, while the harbor itself (including CSXT's LAB interlocking, the Livingston Avenue Bridge) is on 156.650 (note, the CSXT LAB interlocking is on the CSX NC road/dispatch pair, 160.8 road [AAR 46/46], 161.07 dispatcher [64/64]; but the interlocking/bridge operator is also on the harbor frequency). The Port of Albany, NY, primarily uses 160.9800 MHz for the CSX Port Subdivision, which is controlled by the NI Dispatcher on 160.6200 MHz.” [6] By the way, as promised, BBC EAGLE (IMO: 9407574) is a Heavy Lift Vessel and is sailing under the flag of Antigua Barbuda. Her length overall (LOA) is 139 meters 457 feet), and her width is 20 meters (65 ½ feet). [7] This was an exploration that allowed me to get inside both yards and a significant portion of the port. I was there on a Sunday, so I didn’t disrupt any work and wasn’t in the way. Getting into the Port yard was a little tricky but once I found the abandoned rail line it was fairly to follow. It was amazing to see all that was going on. I had been through the Port before, but it was always busy. I was able to get places I knew I wouldn’t have gotten into on a workday.
