At 3:15 pm Friday afternoon, Caney Creek Fire was dispatched to a reported major accident on FM 1314 near Calhoun (Bennette Estates). Units arrived to find a loaded 18-wheeler dump truck had slammed into a passenger car as it was leaving the driveway of an auto shop. Firefighters quickly determined the driver of the car who was trapped was deceased. Multiple DPS units responded to the scene. FM 1314 was closed down to one lane for almost 3-hours as the crash was investigated. After impact, the truck pushed the car just over 600 feet. Many may feel the truck was at an excessive speed. However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calculates a loaded 18-wheeler traveling at 60 mph during emergency braking requires 720 feet to stop. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured. Montgomery County Justice of the Peace Jason Dunn responded to the scene for the inquest and ordered Rios Funeral Directors to transport the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. Montgomery County District Attorney's Office Vehicular Crimes Team also responded to the scene to assist. Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constables Office assisted with traffic control. For several hours the Bennette Estates Subdivision was cut off to vehicle traffic.
