Welcome to a brand-new video set series focused on inclusive leadership. In this video set series, we will explore how you can become an inclusive leader in any space you enter - whether that's an organization, workplace, classroom, friend group, family, or community. You will learn about specific inclusion skills that will help you create and enhance environments where you and everyone around you can thrive together. Throughout this series, we will break down: What inclusive leadership truly means. Why inclusion is essential for community and belonging. The specific skills that make someone an inclusive leader. How to apply these skills in your daily life. This video set series connects to my civic identities section of my civic engagement curriculum, which focuses on the actions we commit to that shape who we are and how we represent ourselves. One key civic personality we explore is being a leader. In this series, we will examine leadership through the lens of inclusion and what that looks like in today's society. Much of the insight for this video set series is inspired by Jennifer Brown's book, How to Be an Inclusive Leader: Your Role in Creating Cultures of Belonging Where Everyone Can Thrive. Brown outlines the Inclusive Leader Continuum, which includes four stages: 1. Unaware - Not recognizing inequities or challenges faced by different groups and viewing diversity as an issue rather than a value. 2. Aware - Beginning to understand that the playing field is not level and recognizing personal blind spots and biases. 3. Active - Taking proactive steps to support equity and inclusion, stepping outside of your comfort zone, and making inclusion visible in your actions. 4. Advocate - Becoming a voice for systemic change and taking brave, public action to challenge exclusion and transform biased systems. We will explore each of these stages in depth through the video set series. By the end of this video set series, you will have a deeper understanding of what inclusion means, how inclusion connects to leadership & civic engagement, and how you can apply inclusive practices in your everyday interactions. Being inclusive is about creating space for people to be themselves. It takes effort and resilience, but with the tools we will cover, you will be more prepared to lead with inclusion and stand up against exclusion wherever you see it.
