The Whiskey Crusaders review Chartreuse Green Liqueur which comes in at 110 proof. It is made in France by the Carthusian Monks of La Grande Chartreuse near Grenoble, France. It is made up of 130 Alpine herbs using the same 1605 secret formula protected and known only by 3 Carthusian brothers who have taken a vow of silence. They are also the only who’s who know how much and how to distill it into the green and yellow versions. It also comes in yellow which is much lower proof and the extremely rare VEP. It is the only liqueur to have a color named after it. It is the only liqueur in the world with a natural green color. It is made up of 130 herbs, plants, alcohol and sugar. The La Grande Chartreuse is on the seal of the bottle. All of the herbs are dried in the old monastery bakery which is now the herb room. All herbs are labeled and put into bags for delivery to the Aiguenoire Distillery that opened in 2017. This is the 7th distillery the Chartreusen monks have used for Chartreuse. It is macerated for an unknown period then distilled. It is then tasted in the lab by the monks and then put into casks to be aged for several years before the monks decide it is ready to be bottled. The new bottling line comes online this year. The longest liquor cellar in the world is located in Vioron where the previous distillery was and continues to be aged there.
