Step into the engineer's seat and experience the thrill of operating a historic locomotive! This cab ride aboard the B&O Railroad Museum’s General Motors-Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP-30 No. 6944 offers a rare, up-close perspective of a locomotive in action during a Mile One Express train ride. Watch as the engineer navigates the train, providing a unique glimpse into the world of railroad operations. Built in 1962, GP-30 No. 6944 is a diesel-electric, general-purpose road switcher locomotive. With a builder number of 27661 and constructed under EMD order No. 7631, it was part of the only class of locomotives delivered to the B&O in the striking sunburst paint scheme. Rebuilt into a GP-30m in 1982 at the B&O’s Cumberland, MD locomotive shops, the locomotive was later renumbered as CSXT No. 4253. After its retirement in January 1996, it was donated to the B&O Railroad Museum and restored to its original number and paint scheme in June of that year. This locomotive serves as a tangible link to the B&O’s innovative diesel era and remains a testament to the railroad’s legacy. Filmed at the iconic B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, this video takes you to the heart of railroad history. Located at the historic Mount Clare Station and adjacent roundhouse, the museum stands on 40 acres of the B&O Railroad’s original Mount Clare Shops site—where America’s first railroad began in 1829. Join us for this unforgettable journey into the past! Notable equipment we pass: American Freedom Train 4-8-4 #1 (Reading T-1 #2101) built in 1945.
