They sequester carbon at a rate 35 times faster than the Amazon rainforest, making them one of nature’s most powerful carbon sinks. Yet we’re losing these underwater meadows at an alarming 7% annually due to climate change and nutrient runoff. As excess carbon accumulates in our atmosphere, oceans absorb more CO2 than they can handle, creating conditions too acidic for seagrass to survive. The resulting mass die-offs don’t just devastate the marine species that depend on these meadows for shelter; they undermine a critical carbon regulation system that all life on Earth relies upon.
