In this episode, Mark talks about some safety concerns with saddle hunting and climbing using the single rope technique or static rope technique (SRT), this applies to the one sticking method as well. In this case I am demonstrating with a madrock safeguard, but this method can be applied to any belay device like the GRI GRI, GRIGRI+, Madrock lifeguard, etc. You can use a variety of friction hitches to back up a belay device like a prusik, swabisch, or in this case the Cornell's Friction Hitch. Recent events have taught the saddle hunter world that we need to be prepared for when things don't go as planned. This lesson was learned the hard way as a fellow saddle hunter, Dane Purcell, tragically died while practicing climbing in his saddle. He suffered a suspension trauma which led him to pass out and flip upside down, where he eventually passed away from his injuries. Saddle hunting is the safest option, but any time you leave the ground, you are at risk of suspension trauma and/or falling. Be prepared, understand your gear, and we can avoid this accidents in the future! . . Studies show that the majority of modern hunters had family members who raised them as hunters, and a large portion of non-hunters want to hunt but don't know where to start. By documenting our hunting adventures, making instructional or tutorial videos, and really anything-hunting-related videos, we hope to help bridge that gap by providing practical information for beginner and experienced hunters on how to become a better and more ethical hunter.
