John 6:54: “The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” Because of Jesus’ statements in John 6:53-56 of eating His flesh and drinking His blood, some Christians erroneously and uncontextually see these passages as a reference to the Last Supper. Although, unlike the Synoptics, John never mentions the institution of the Lord’s Supper; the “time frame” of the Lord’s Supper would have been in John 13, which is also an entirely different context than that of chapter 6. Even worse, Roman Catholics appeal to these passages as a proof text for Rome’s blasphemous teaching of Transubstantiation (ontologically eating Jesus’ flesh), which both denies Jesus’ one-time sacrifice for sins, and deforms the incarnation. However, Jesus defines what He means in verses 53-56 back in verse 35: “I am ho artos [‘the bread’] of life; ho erchomenos [‘the one coming’] to Me will not be hungry, and ho pisteuwn [‘the one believing’] in Me will never be thirsty.” Verse 35 and verses 54, 56 have the same verbal tenses: present active participles: 54 Ho trōgōn [‘munching’] mou tēn sarka kai pinōn [‘drinking’] mou to haima [‘of My blood’] has eternal life. . . . 56 Ho trōgōn mou tēn sarka kai pinōn mou to haima [lit., ‘the munching of me the flesh and drinking of me the blood’] remains in Me, and I in him.” Thus, “I am the bread of life; ho erchomenos [‘the one coming’] to Me will not be hungry, and ho pisteuwn [‘the one believing’] in Me will never be thirsty.” Jesus is the bread of life “the one coming” (v. 35) is equivalent to “the one eating” (vv. 54, 56), His flesh (shall never hunger), and “the one believing” is equivalent to “the one drinking” (vv. 54, 56) His blood (will never thirst). Since all verbs (vv. 35, and 54, 56) are present tense active participles—they denote ongoing present actions of “coming,” “believing,” “eating” and “drinking” of the bread of life. Thus, present actions of doing—thus, not pointing to the future institution of the Lord’s Supper, a year later.
