JOHN 8:28: “So Jesus said, ‘When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that egō eimi [ἐγώ εἰμι, ‘I am’], and I do nothing on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me” (cf. v. 24). In the gospels, Jesus claimed to be the Son of Man seventy-eight times (counting the parallel accounts in the Gospels). The “Son of Man” applied to Christ is well accepted – as derived from Daniel 7:13-14. In the NT, the singular “Son of Man” (used eighty-four times – all referring to Christ) – represented Jesus’ humanity (infrequently) and primarily, as with the “Son of God,” it represented His deity (or His hypostatic union) especially related to His eternal preexistence. MARK 14:61-64: “But He kept silent and did not offer any answer. Again the high priest was questioning Him, and *said to Him, ‘Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?’ 62 And Jesus said, ‘I am; and you shall see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.’ 63 Tearing his clothes, the high priest *said, ‘What further need do we have of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy; how does it seem to you?’ And they all condemned Him as deserving of death.” JOHN 3:13: “No one has ascended [anabebēken, perfect indicative] into heaven, except ho ek tou ouranou katabas [‘the One out of the heaven having come down aorist participle], the Son of Man” (in P75, "Son of Man" is written as a Nomen Sacrum [sacred name], ⲩ̅ⲛ̅ ⲧⲟⲩ ⲁ̅ⲛ̅ⲟ̅ⲩ). The TR adds after “Son of Man”: ho ōn [ὁ ὢν, ‘the One who is, timelessly existing] in heaven.” The articular participle ὁ ὢν is used of Christ: John 1:18: μονογενὴς Θεὸς ὁ ὢν ['the One who is, timelessly existing'] in the bosom of the Father. . . .” Rom. 9:5: “To them belong the patriarchs, and from them, by human descent, came the Christ, ὁ ὢν ['the One who is, timelessly existing'] God over all, blessed forever! Amen.” And, Rev. 1:8: “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God – the one ὁ ὢν ['the One who is, timelessly existing'], and who was, and who is still to come – the All-Powerful”- cf. Exod. 3:14. John 6:62: “What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? In P66, P75, "the Son of Man” - appears as a Nomen sacrum – ⲧⲟⲛ ⲩ̅ⲛ̅ ⲧⲟⲩ ⲁ̅ⲛ̅ⲟ̅ⲩ̅ Jesus is the Son of Man, Son of God, God in the flesh in whom we have salvation. In John 9:36-38: Jesus had asked the now healed blind man: "Do you believe in the Son of Man?’ He answered, 'Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?' 37 Jesus said to him, 'You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you.’ 38 And he said, ‘Lord, I believe.' And he worshiped Him’” (John 9:36-38). Dr. Edward L Dalcour http://christiandefense.org/ DEPARTMENT OF CHRISTIAN DEFENSE is an educational and apologetic ministry, EDWARD L.
