Part. 1: The Claims of Christ as God- Where did Jesus ever say, "I am God?" Answer: Nowhere. Why would He? In light of the OT usage of Elohim ("God, gods")- that would have been a very ambiguous statement. For Moses, judges, angels, mighty men, etc. were all called Elohim--viz., God(s). However – Jesus’ claims of ontological coequality with God, that is, God Himself, were much stronger and unequivocal - than if He had literally said, “I am God.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In this multi - part series, we will explore some of the significant unequivocal claims made by Jesus Christ affirming His unipersonality and ontological coequality and coeternality with God by: 1. His self-identification as YHWH - as the Angel of the LORD in the OT, And 2. His claims to be truly God in the NT - including: a. His claims to have been the agent of His own resurrection (John 2:19). b. His claims to be the unpredicated “I Am” (John 8:24, 58 et al.) - Resulting in the Jews wanting to kill Him. c. His claims to be the unique divine Son of God- equal with God the Father (Mark 14:61-64; John 5:17-18; John 10:30-36; 19:7) - Resulting in the Jews wanting to kill Him. d. His claims to be the divine Son of Man (Mark 14:61-64) - Resulting in the Jews wanting to kill Him (Mark 14:61-64). e. And His unambiguous claims to have eternally preexisted (John 3:13; 17:5 et al.) There are three compelling and verifiable proofs - that plainly show Jesus Christ as true God: 1. Both the OT and NT presents the person of the Son, as God, - not representational nor in a polytheistic sense, rather, in a monotheistic trinitarian sense—i.e., God ontologically. 2. Unchangeable Creator of all things, and. 3. He was worshiped in a religious context—as God Himself. Also note: - within proximity of the most significant claims of Christ to be God- - Jesus distinguishes Himself from God the Father, as did the Father esp. in the prologue of Hebrews, which is consistent with Trinitarianism, and not with any form of unitarianism esp. Oneness-unitarianism. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In Part 2, we will start with John 2:19 (Jesus' claim to have been the agent of His own resurrection) and the claims of the preincarnate person of the Son (i.e., the angel of the LORD) as YHWH. Scripture in the OT and NT presents Jesus Christ as the two-natured person. In both the OT and NT, the Son is identified as YHWH, the Creator of all things and was worshiped as God. In Jude 1:5, P72 (my favorite non-viable variant), He is referred to as the ⲑ̅ⲥ̅ ⲭ̅ⲣ̅ⲥ̅ (θεὸς Χριστός, "God Christ").
