Japanese Mogami frigate Noshiro arrives in Darwin

Japanese Mogami class frigate JS Noshiro arrived in Darwin over the weekend as part of Japan’s bid for the $10 billion light frigate project. The ship, an earlier version of the vessel being pitched to Australia for the navy’s new light frigate project is expected to participate in joint exercises with Royal Australian Navy ships. Japan’s Defence Minister Gen Nakatani said the visit by the frigate Noshiro would help strengthen co-operation and mutual trust between the two navies. The visit will give Australian navy commanders a chance to see the ship up close ahead of a final decision on the so-called SEA3000 general purpose frigate tender. It will also be visiting Fremantle. And a Lithuanian rower was rescued by HMAS Choules on Monday morning after he was caught in Cyclone Alfred’s turbulent path off the Queensland coast.
