Vashon Island On May 28,1792 Captain George Vancouver from the British Royal Navy who was exploring the region and performing his surveys of the Puget Sound area named Vashon Island after his friend James Vashon. There is evidence that Native Peoples settled on Vashon Island dating back 10,00 to 12,000 years ago. European Americans settled on Vashon Island between 1865 and 1890. During that time the main economies on the island were logging and fishing. There was a large Japanese population on the island but were forcible removed and placed into internment camps due to World War II. (Source Wikipedia) After the Treaties of Medicine Creek in 1854 in which the Puyallup and Nisqually Tribes who had ancestral lands in the area ceded them to the federal government. The Treaty of Point Elliot of 1855 which was signed by the Duwamish, Suquamish, and other tribes that used Vashon Island as a seasonal camp ceded millions of acres to the federal government. Following these treaties, many Native Americans were forced to leave Vashon Island. In summary, the transfer of Vashon Island to the U. S. Government was a result of a colonial process involving treaties that Native people signed under duress and coercion rather than a voluntary gift. (source internet research) Ferry Service to Vashon Island from Point Defiance The first ferry service from Point Defiance to Vashon was established on May 15, 1920, with Pierce County operating the route using the ferry City of Tacoma. In 1926, The Skansie brothers’ Washington Navigation Company purchased the rights and ferries. In 1941, The Puget Sound Navigation Company (Black Ball Line) took over the service. In 1951, Washington State Ferries began operating the route, taking over from a local ferry district that had been formed after dissatisfaction with the private Black Ball Line company. The Washington State Ferry Service is the largest ferry system in the United States.
