Thousands tuned into the May 29, 2025 Speak Up For Justice forum as leading legal voices, including a federal judge, a state attorney general, and former DOJ prosecutors, delivered a powerful warning: the attacks on our courts are no longer hypothetical; they’re here. The event was organized and moderated by Paul Kiesel of Kiesel Law LLP, a nationally recognized trial attorney who launched Speak Up For Justice to defend the rule of law and judicial independence. Judge Margaret McKeown (U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit) opened the forum with a sobering warning: “The Chief Justice said the rule of law is endangered, and he was not crying wolf… Attacks on our courts in the U.S. are starting to resemble those in authoritarian regimes.” Drawing on her decades of international judicial work, she detailed a global “rule of law recession,” citing: Venezuela, Turkey, and Poland as examples of courts under siege. Because judges are ethically constrained from defending themselves publicly, McKeown issued a call to action: “When judges can’t speak for themselves, it’s the legal community’s job to stand up, stand tall, and stand for justice.” Other key voices from the forum included: Jeff Jackson, Attorney General of North Carolina: “This job is about protecting people, not protecting a party.” Rachel Cohen, former Big Law Attorney: “I resigned from my firm when it became clear they would not stand against executive orders targeting lawyers for who they represent.” Will Rollins, former Federal Prosecutor: “When someone threatened to assassinate me during my campaign, I understood how fear can silence public service.” Ashley Akers, former DOJ Trial Counsel: “Judicial independence isn’t just for judges—it’s a safeguard for every single American.” Paul Kiesel, moderator and founder of Speak Up For Justice: “Judges can’t speak for themselves—but we can, and we must.” The next Speak Up For Justice forum is currently in planning.
