Japanese First Press, 1979, CBS/Sony – 40AP 1750~1, 2xVinyl, LP, 33⅓ RPM. Release date 8 December 1979. Recorded at Super Bear Studios (Berre-les-Alpes France) Manufactured by CBS/SONY Inc. (Tokyo Japan) © 1979 Pink Floyd Music Ltd. The Wall is the eleventh studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was released as a double LP on 30 November 1979, started being performed live along with artistic theatrical effects and became a movie with the title “Pink Floyd: The Wall”. The sales exceeded 30 million copies worldwide. ‘The Wall’ is the biggest in sales double album in the history of music. Roger Waters wrote the biggest part of the album, with David Gilmour co-writting ‘Comfortably Numb’, ‘Run Like Hell’ and ‘Young Lust’ and Bob Ezrin ‘The Trial’. In ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ Gilmour recorded the guitar solo using a “Gibson” Les Paul Gold Top guitar of 1955 with pick-ups P-90. The idea for the album was conceived during the ‘In The Flesh Tour’ of 1977, when the bassist and lyricist Roger Waters, disappointed from the fans, imagined a wall between the band and the fans. The album is focused on one character, Pink, who is based on Roger Waters. Pink’s personal experiences begin with the loss of his father during WWII and continue with the abuse from his teachers, his overprotective mother and his divorce. All of these incidents contribute to his – probably self-forced – isolation from society, which is projected as a virtual wall. Every single one of these wounds are figuratively converted into “bricks in the wall”. The lead character becomes a rock star, whose relationships are tarnished by cheating, drugs and violence. The collapse of his marriage finishes “the wall”, concluding his isolation from society. Behind his wall, Pink’s crisis escalates and is certified with a hallucinogenic appearance on stage, in which he believes he is a fascist dictator and appears in a gathering similar to the neonazi ones, where he sends men to fans he thinks are unworthy. Tortured by guilt, he puts himself on trial to knock down the wall, that will lead Pink into finding an opening to the outer world. The album comes to full circle with the words “Isn’t this where...”, which are the first words of the opening phrase in the album “… we came in?”.
