Treble Clef in Bb (Tuba in Bb) Performance Notes: Mozart, like many of his time, appreciated the exotic sounding music of the Turkish bands, and so incorporated aspects of that sound into some of his works—most notably his opera, “Die Entführung aus dem Serail” (“The Abduction of the Seraglio”), and this, the final movement of his “Piano Sonata No. 11.” The piece is became widely known, receiving countless performances, and inspiring many new and some even wildly arrangements. This virtuoso setting is a vehicle to feature, ideally, two matched instruments, or at the minimum, two unmatched instruments playing in the same octave. Performance with part 1 on a tuba and part 2 on a cornet, while possible, might yield less-than-satisfactory results. The tempo in the original score is not specifically marked and so it is completely left to the performers to establish the tempo of the piece. Furthermore, while it has become common practice to alter the tempo in various ways throughout the piece, no guidance regarding any tempo changes is given.
