For anyone wondering, yes, I was giving a nod to the 80s 😂 “Paralyzed” is about chasing after someone you imagined you’d become as a child. Life continues whether we’re prepared for it or not. Seeing all the consequences of our decisions, often in real time, can be quite discouraging, making you feel as though you’re always a few steps behind the person want to become. Failure can be so crippling and often leave you feeling paralyzed. In such a helpless state, it’s so easy to want to tell that version of yourself you’re chasing not to wait for you. Toward the end of the song, there is an acknowledgment that as long as you’re moving forward and thinking of what you can do better, you have permission to ask that “you” you’re following to wait, rather than leave you behind.
