Written by Jacques Brel, Mort Shuman and Eric Blau. Arranged by Ernie Freeman and produced by Dick Glasser. French language title: « Quand on n'a que l'amour » From an off-Broadway show, « Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris”, which opened in 1968 and was essentially a revue consisting of around 25 Jacques Brel songs. The lyricist here, Eric Blau, was the Production Supervisor. Major artists began covering this song the following year and 45s appeared from Dion, Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis and Julie Rogers, whils artists such as Shirley Bassey and Nancy Wilson issued the song as an LP track. The Vogues were one of the first artists to record the song, which is so suited to their big ballad style. The Vogues moved to Reprise from Co & Ce in 1968 and scored immediately with “Turn Around, Look At Me” (#7, 1968). “If We Only Have Love” was coupled with a Mann-Weil song, “See That Girl” but neither side charted. The Vogues followed with a cover of the Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” in 1970. Jacques Brel was a Belgian singer-composer, whom we lost in 1978 at the all too young age of 49.
