Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker; he who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished. — Proverbs 17:5 This one captured my attention because I felt a conviction when I read the second part of the proverb. It made me think of all those times I wished ill on a rival team during the NFL season. And then, after a short chuckle, I stopped to reflect a little on why do I do this. What makes me enjoy the calamity of an opposing team? And I think it has something to with the edge that a skilled opponent has on me. They could have an edge on my talent, ability, or skill which causes me to feel inferior. And thus, the deception is that when "they win, I lose." And therefore, I conclude, if "they lose, then I win." But as we discover in the proverb, this is a dangerous move. And it's dangerous because of the authority established in the first part of the text. God is called the "Maker." He is the one who makes all things. And this text suggests he has "making authority" over every life situation, even those who live in poverty or persecution. God is the Maker of all things, events, and situations. This means that when we mock someone's status or circumstance, we may be mocking God, who can do the same to us. A God who uses these unfortunate events to drive us to dependence on him. So when this subtle, devious desire rises up in you today — a desire to mock someone's position or take pleasure in another's misfortune, look again. See the situation for what it is — God driving a humbled man back to him. And don't mock or take pleasure in it because this man could be you. ASK THIS: Who is someone you need to encourage today? DO THIS: Text them a note of encouragement. PRAY THIS: God, forgive me for mocking and finding pleasure in the misfortune of others. PLAY THIS: James Fortune & FIYA - Favor of God.
