Dagwood hadn’t visited Ubon Ratchathani in almost 20 years and to be honest, it wasn’t his favorite place in Thailand back then. But, he decided to give it a second chance… and he’s glad he did. This video isn’t meant to be a full documentary or a scientific survey of the city but a casual day-trip look for a visitor or someone considering retiring here. Dagwood only spent a couple of nights, but he’s now certain he will return because he had such a great time and the people were awesome. Located in Thailand’s northeast region known as Isan, Ubon Ratchathani is around 614 km (382 miles) by road from Bangkok. The city is served by Ubon Ratchathani Airport (IATA code UBP), so it’s very accessible by air from Bangkok with flight time of about an hour. Ubon has modern supermarkets such as Lotus’s, Big C and Makro so you’ll find good shopping options and everyday convenience. For healthcare there is among others, a private hospital, Ubonrak Thonburi Hospital, offering many general and specialist services. The population of the Ubon Ratchathani metropolitan area is estimated to be 528,000 in 2025, while the population of the city proper is around 68,477 as of January 2025. The population of the entire province was over 1.86 million in 2017 according to Wikipedia. Dagwood found the vibe very different from 20 years ago; cleaner, more friendly and lively now compared to the last visit. In fact, locals even came up to ask Dagwood to take their pictures — something not every visitor experiences. One standout place was the mall, Central Plaza Ubon Ratchathani is easily the liveliest mall in the region. Thailand’s malls are strong overall but this one felt like it had a special energy with good food & friendly people as well as attractions like a go-cart ring, play pool and aquarium. One quirky moment: while standing by the Mun River, two dogs emerged from under a silver van and charged him. None of his usual soi dog prevention tricks (pretending to pick up a rock, ignoring them) worked until he backed up to his vehicle, opened the door, and got in. Once they saw he was near the car, they backed off.
