Birding Bolsa Chica, Feb 27, 2026

This video documents a return visit to Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, continuing my ongoing birding, photography, and videography work in support of my 2026 Birding Big Year. Highlights of the outing included a rare Red-throated Loon and excellent views of a Tricolored Heron, both photographed and filmed during the visit. The video features multiple short segments combining still photography and video clips. Voiceovers are used throughout to provide context for the sightings and observations made during the outing. From a production standpoint, this video also includes an early attempt to use a directional microphone in the field. Background traffic noise proved far more significant than anticipated, limiting the usefulness of the recorded audio, but the experience provided valuable lessons for future field recording. After taking a few weeks away from posting to practice videography and produce short-form content, this video reflects a continued effort to refine both field capture and storytelling techniques. As of this video, my 2026 Birding Big Year total stands at 138 species, toward a goal of 300.
