So, I decided to learn the Grapevine move, after watching someone do it at Bryant Park around Christmas 2015. But it turned out that one didn't simply jump from barely skating forward, to being able to execute the Grapevine. Many other skills of intermediate difficulty had to be learned and practiced, before one could skate a recognizable Grapevine. Even though I still haven't mastered the thrust at the last step of the move, in order to continue and repeat the move in perpetuity, I figure that it is worthwhile showing these intermediate moves I learned from online sources which helped me understand edge and balance. Without these I never would have been able to unlock the secrets to the Grapevine. Start with this article: https://xinhaidude.com/2016/05/12/ice.... Then read https://xinhaidude.com/2016/05/15/lea... for in-depth analysis of how this move works. I have subsequently re-learned the Grapevine in inline skates. See: https://xinhaidude.com/2021/09/15/lea.... The Cantiague rink was empty, again, on the last Friday night session of the season. I won't have a chance to film without a crowd again until the spring. Music is written by my friend Dan Adler and performed by Dan Adler and company. Used with permission. Talia's Waltz from All Things Familiar. http://danadler.com. TheFantasyFen pointed out that the unnamed move in the video is called the "Forward Cross Roll". Thank you. Updated 2021-12: I've taken a detour during the pandemic. I ended up inline-skating this year. Boy, did I trip at first, when I tried to skate on wheels as if I were on ice skates with sharp blades : ) It turned out all skills were essentially still the same on wheels, but they were all subtly different. After re-learning these basic skills, I managed to re-create Grapevine on wheels: https://xinhaidude.com/2021/09/15/lea.... And I've recently come back to ice rinks in the last two months. I am happy to report that the inline detour actually allowed me to understand and perform Grapevine on ice better than I could before. I can actually sustain repeated cycles of it on ice now without having to rely on the initial momentum, as I now can better inject energy into it at all four steps of the Grapevine cycle. This came from having to learn to "pivot" on single wheels in inline skate. #tutorial
