Singaraja Bali Snippets: A Walking Tour of Kampung Baru, Singaraja, Bali These are short walking videos on the city of Singaraja, Bali. The idea for these videos of Singaraja was to document the city as it exists today, as a geographical/cultural location in a specific time and space. Why? Because that's what interests me as an anthropologist. And, it is what I think my children and grandchildren will be interested in years in the future when the city has changed and when the residents of that period are no longer around. This video is the first part of a two-part video of a walking tour through the kampungs and desas just to the east of Kampung Bugis where I live. Today we start off at my home, travel through the harbor and Singaraja Square and then meander down the small street that runs parallel to the sea. This neighborhood or kampung is named Kampung Baru, also known as Kampung Tinggi. As with most neighborhoods located adjacent to the sea, Kampung Baru is a neighborhood filled with residents of a variety of religions and ethnicities. Despite the many differences, the people here live together harmoniously. Buleleng Harbor was built in 1898 after the South Bali area was controlled by the Dutch and Buleleng Harbor became the largest port in Bali. The high level of economic activity centered around the port attracted people from around Bali and neighoring islands who came looking for work. The harbor has not been active for many years and Singaraja's overall economy declined after the division of the Lesser Sunda province between Bali, NTT, and NTB in 1958 and the movement of the capital of to Denpasar. For the general tourist there isn't that much to see other than the TITD SENG HONG BIO temple. But, for those who want to get a glimpse of life in a fishing neighborhood, Kampung Baru is worth a visit. Thanks for viewing, be kind to someone today and stay safe. _______________________________________________________________ Music from Epidemic Sound: https://www.epidemicsound.com/referra...
