"Fill them up like they do down at Bachmans!" - that's how kids used to ask for ice cream in Lindsborg! There's a long history of ice cream shops & other frozen sweet treats in #Lindsborg! TODAY, of course, you have Indigo Moo'd, Barnyard Creamery, and Lindsborg Tropical Sno. But also at various times there has been Happy Swede Ice Cream Saloon (temporarily closed), Three Sisters Ice Cream Parlor & Deli (today Fuqua Insurance), Northern Delite (today the studio of Jim Richardson), Scandinavian Ice (occupying at various times what is today Small World Gallery & Anderson Butik), and a series of shops in the same location at 300 N. Harrison St... Hudson's Tasty Spot, B's Tasty Spot, Li'le Swede Soft Serve & Deli, and finally Casper's Ice Cream & Deli (today Artistic Hair and Nail Design). Given this history & the heat of summer coming to an end, for this #FlashbackFriday we highlight an interview from Nov. 8, 1985, with Ellen Bachman and her connection with the history of the Bachman Ice Cream Company. Ellen - not happy with farming life after marrying in 1910 - convinced her husband, David, to take an ownership stake in the Ideal Bakery & Ice Cream Parlor (originally downtown where Anderson Butik is today). The Bachmans moved the ice cream shop to be next to the local ice factory at 321 E. Lincoln (today The Service Center). David and Ellen ALWAYS kept a dish of ice cream at 5 cents for decades while they owned the shop and offered more than 20 flavors with fresh ingredients. Later, their son, Elliott, and his wife, Holly, took over the business in the 1950s and added a cafe-style location at 304 E. Lincoln (today Lindsborg Laundry Services, LLC). Bachman's closed in the 1960s, facing competition from national brands, but they left a legacy of nearly 50 years of providing the community with delicious ice cream! Digitization of these videos was made possible with a small Nutt grant from the McPherson County Community Foundation. #ToTheStarsKS #Lindsborg #lindsborgks #lbk #visitlindsborg #SmokyValley #KansasHistory #oralhistory #oralhistorymatters #oralhistoryproject #icecream #IceCreamHistory
