Based on the 1891 published song “Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay,” the song “It’s Howdy Doody Time” was the theme for the Howdy Doody TV show. Starring Buffalo Bob Smith and his Howdy Doody puppet, the show was a children’s television program which aired from 1947 to 1960. The Peanut Gallery was a feature of the show which had about 40 children who sat on the onstage bleachers. “Each show began with Buffalo Bob asking, 'Say kids, what time is it?’ And the kids yelling in unison, ‘It’s Howdy Doody time!’ Then the kids sang the show’s theme song (set to the tune of ‘Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay’)." It’s Howdy Doody time, It’s Howdy Doody time, Bob Smith and Howdy, too Say “Howdy do” to you. Let’s give a rousing cheer ’Cause Howdy Doody’s here. It’s time to start the show So kids, let’s go! The show was one of the first television series produced at NBC in Rockefeller Center, one of the first TV shows with audience participation, and a pioneer in both children’s television programming and in early color production. In this piano improvisation, Charles Manning creates an unusual arrangement of the Howdy Doody theme song by using different keys, harmonies, and musical styles.
