On Saturday 29th June 2024, 3265 "Hunter" hauled four heritage shuttles for @TransportHeritageNSW between Penrith and Valley Heights, assisted throughout by heritage diesel engine 4501. In this film, the 1904-built @powerhousemuseum -owned engine is captured at four locations in the lower Blue Mountains. As well as the steamer, there's a few other trains to see along the way and some history to explore: The names of the stations, the story of our star steamer and the history of one of our locations too. Special thank you to @NSWRailwaysVideos (A-Z Photography) and @bathursttrainspotting without whom this film probably wouldn't have happened, or at least wouldn't have been as nice to shoot as it was. Another thank you to ozziebirder for their kind permission to use the emu photograph. Another few photos used in this film (mainly portraits and archive photos) are public domain - these are noted when they appear. Glenbrook in particular is a station I genuinely have a bit of love for, whilst this is the first appearance of the others in some time: Warrimoo was last seen in 2021, Emu Plains in 2017 and Blaxland in 2016! As well as 3265 "Hunter", an engine I really like, and 4501, at least one V set appears at each station; they're in their twilight years so it's a case of "get them while you still can". Freight workings also appear at Emu Plains and finally, a quick post-credit expedition to Mount Victoria shows a 158 Films regular as well, which will lead into a longer Mt. Vic. film when I finish it. As for history, I've stuffed this film full of it which partly accounts for why it's one of the longest films I've made this year. Both 3265 "Hunter" and Emu Plains have their history explored in some depth, allowing me to pull out archive film from as far back as 2018 for "Hunter" and 2017 for Emu Plains. Lachlan Valley Railway's 3237 "Lachlan" appears a couple of times in 3265's history class, as the latter did for the former last year, alongside footage of the red engine in 2019 & 2018. Emu Plains meanwhile was, for history, all new. The building obviously is the most interesting thing, but the story of how the station got its name warrants some interest too. A few clips from 2017 appeared in • SOV237: Wednesday On The Western Line Part... , including that XRN clip which I'm very happy I have. 4501's history will be covered in Great Western Garratt as noted in-video when I complete it, but I give a short snippet here. Another special thank you to A-Z Photography ( @NSWRailwaysVideos ) and @bathursttrainspotting for having me along for most of the day (and maming it very enjoyable; always more fun doing it with friends) and to ozziebirder for kind permission to use their emu photograph.
