Highlights from the first day of this years West Somerset Railway Autumn Steam Gala. The event made a welcome return for the first time since Covid in a few years, and boasted a good line up of locomotives, with the newly overhauled LSL GWR Castle 5029 ‘Nunney Castle’ topping the bill having spent the summer based out of Bishops Lydeard while working Saphos Trains and Steam Dreams excursions to Devon. The other big guest engine came from the Swanage Railway with the elegant LSWR T3 No 563 making a first visit for the class working the Minehead branch. A couple of smaller familiar visitors completed the guest line up with GWR No. 813 from the Severn Valley Railway, wearing its Backworth NCB guise as No 11, with Andrew Barclay’s No 1219 Caledonia Works completing the line up returning from the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway ahead of withdrawal for overhaul. Resident WSR Mogul 9351, GWR 7828 ‘Odney Manor’ and a Class 33 (substituting for failed 7812 'Erlestoke Manor') were also in action so enjoy all the movements from the first day of the gala!
