Guests David Robinson (Director/Chief Archaeologist, Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources) and Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin (President, CEO & Director of Research, R. Christopher Goodwin and Associates) This talk focused not on specific excavations but on the general subject of Underwater Archaeology. Archaeological activities performed underwater have essentially the same goals as normal (terrestrial) archaeology. A significant difference, of course, would be "the commute" ... getting to the site, confirming its appropriateness, and generating a site plan. The tools are different, requiring the use of a diving suit, but their objectives -- remote sensing, ultrasound, GPR, and the like -- are the same. Specialized ones include submersibles and RPVs. Ocean levels are rising -- about 400 feet in the last 26,000 years -- and this places an extra burden on archaeologists when trying to determine sites. Water is both a destroyer of some artifacts and a preserver of others. Many organics are lost, though some organics (e.g., boats and barges) can remain for hundreds of years and enable us to track their evolution. Water served as the highways of human culture; and searches of libraries and historical records are very useful in helping determine the possible location of shipwrecks and their cargoes. The diving community can also be a significant aid in site determination. And, of course, fishermen who know the waters and what may be underneath.
