Guests Dr. Rae Gould (Brown University/Nipmuc Tribal Nation) and Dr. Jacqueline Veninger-Robert (UCONN NAGPRA Coordinator) NAGPRA was enacted in 1990 to outline a requirement and process for museums and federal agencies to return certain Native American cultural items (including human remains) to lineal descendants, culturally affiliated Indian tribes, or Native Hawaiian organizations. Historically, this was required because, prior to it, the perception of Native American peoples and cultures was essentially ignored or not held relevant, as a result of conflicts between the Native and Western populations throughout our history. This has caused the desecration of graves, the corruption and warehousing of both human remains and cultural artifacts, and the loss of cultural heritages. Adhering to these guidelines is an ongoing effort, as the Act is not a 1-size-fits-all document but is rather set of guidelines which are to be followed when funding is requested for site work. Especially as the Native American peoples and their descendants are still living with us, the Act's intent is ultimately to ensure the respecting of the thread of their ancestors' cultural traditions, lifestyles, and ancestors.
