Brachytherapy is a solid option for men in this stage because studies show that it has better cure rates, lower side effect rates, and tends to be more convenient than other standard therapies. Brachytherapy used to be the most popular form of treatment, but now, other treatments reimburse better so they are typically favored by doctors. 1:13 Positives of permanent brachytherapy. This form of therapy has higher cure rates and lower side effects than surgery or external beam radiation. Seeds are administered as an outpatient procedure and can be performed in as short as 1 hour. This contrasts with the long recovery period of surgery, and the long treatment course of external beam radiation. 2:03 Negatives of seed implants. Men with preexisting urinary symptoms and men with large prostates can experience worsening of urinary symptoms. In the past, people were concerned about seeds migrating out of the prostate and exposing other tissue to the radiation. Modern technology has solved this issue, by tethering the radioactive seeds together to prevent migration. People also have the concern that since the patient has radioactive material inside them, people around them would be exposed to the radiation. The reality is that the radiation only travels 1-2 centimeters and does not leave the patient’s body. 2:48 Brachytherapy is a procedure that takes specialized skill so it is important to find a qualified practitioner. Look for a doctor who does the procedure regularly. 3:24 Summary. Brachytherapy has fewer side effects, higher cure rates, and more convenience than other forms of therapy. It is not always mentioned upfront because it doesn’t reimburse as well for doctors, but it is a solid form of treatment for men with the Teal stage of prostate cancer.
