In this talk James Jefferies will guide you through examples of RAF Bomber Command in popular media that follows on from his previous talk for History Indoors on the Battle of Britain in film and TV. The talk will analyse examples of how Bomber Command has been represented and observed in film, TV, and radio and how these examples reflect, but have also influenced, the wider memory of the Britain’s strategic bombing campaign on Nazi Germany during the Second World War. The talk will start by looking at productions made during the war itself such as the films Target for Tonight (1941) and One of Our Aircraft is Missing (1942) before looking at films made after the war such as Appointment in London (1953), The Dam Busters (1955) and 633 Squadron (1964). Television will also be looked at including reflections on productions like The Pathfinders (1972-73) and Bomber Harris (1989) as well as others. Radio will also be considered with examples such as the adaptation to radio of Len Deighton’s novel Bomber (1995) and Terrence Rattigan’s play Flarepath (2011). Finally, James will analyse more recent examples such as Lancaster Skies (2019) and The Bombardment (2021). Many other productions will also be considered and examined during the talk which will focus on the way popular media both echoes and influences wider popular narratives of RAF Bomber Command’s Second World War. This will be alongside considering what aspects may be missing and surmise why this may be.
