Predjama Castle & Postojna Cave On 20 Sep 2025, we visited Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave on a single day trip, together with SL. We first took the intercity bus to the bus station of Postojna city, from where we then walked about 20 mins to Postojna Cave. A shuttle bus was waiting to take us to Predjama Castle which is about 7km away. Upon arrival, we first had lunch at a restaurant directly facing Predjama Castle. This is a Renaissance-era castle built into the mouth of a 123m high cliffside cave. The castle has a few floors where we could explore each of the rooms. On the top floor, there is a staircase leading up higher into the cave. Apparently, there is a cave system beneath the castle, but we didn’t get to explore it. We then caught the same shuttle bus back to Postojna Cave in time for the 4pm time slot allocated to us. Postojna Cave has more than 24km of underground passages and chambers (with stunning stalactites and stalagmites) but only 5km is open to visitors. Once inside the cave, we were ushered into a waiting underground electric train which took us deep inside the cave, where we then continued our exploration by foot. It was quite awe-inspiring and after walking for a few km (with a guide offering explanations) we were again ushered into the train to take us out of the cave. By then, the place was quite empty of visitors, as the last group had already entered the cave at 5pm. After having some snacks at one of the restaurants at the cave entrance, we walked back to the Postojna bus station to catch the intercity bus back to Ljubljana. At the bus station, we realised that all this while in Slovenia, I had only been checking the schedules of the ARRIVA bus operator, which only has limited buses stopping over at Postojna. ARRIVA is the bigger bus operator, but it is the other smaller NOMAGO operator that has more frequent buses for Postojna. In fact, when the ARRIVA bus arrived at the scheduled time, it was very full but we managed to board. Quite a few passengers were left standing at the bus station unable to board, but no worries, the next NOMAGO bus was due in another 30 minutes. For slow travel, it takes quite a bit of research of every place that we are visiting, in order to maximise and “smoothen” our experiences. I am not sure whether this is good or bad. On one hand, it pushes us to delve deep into how each country or city works in day to day life, while keeping our minds active and alert. On the other hand, there are moments of added stress when you can be potentially left stranded at a bus station or even at a lonely bus stop, due to a misunderstanding of how the place works. #europetravel #slowtravel #slovenia
