Tuesday, August 26th 1969. Soundless footage of Brigadier Akwasi Afrifa, the Head of State and Chairman of the National Liberation Council (NLC), holding a meeting with service chiefs drawn from Ghana's armed forces at the seat of government, Osu Castle. The purpose of the meeting was to consult with leaders of the army, navy and air force before publicly accepting the appointment made by the Constituent Assembly on Friday, August 22nd in relation to the members of the military who had been designated to form part of a new three-man commission which was to be a part of the government when civilian rule was eventually restored. The commission, which was scheduled to begin office on September 3rd, was to be comprised of Brigadier Afrifa, Major General Ocran, the Vice Chairman of the NLC & Acting Chief of Staff, and John Harley, the Chief of Police. Afrifa was designated as president, a role which he was projected to perform for three years or for a duration to be determined by the next parliament. Present at the meeting were: 1. Brigadier Akwasi Afrifa, Chairman of the NLC. 2. Major General Albert Ocran, Vice Chairman of the NLC. 3. Brigadier David C.K. Amenu, Deputy Chief of Defence Staff. 4. Brigadier D.K. Addo, Commander of the Army. 5. Major General Twum-Barimah, Commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade. 6. Commodore P.F. Quaye, Commander of the Navy. 7. Brigadier N.Y.R. Ashley-Lassen, Commander of the Air Force. 8. Lt. Colonel E.A. Yeboah, Memeber of the NLC. 9. Lt. Colonel E.O. Nyanteh, Chairman of the Public Services Commission. Source: Reuters News Archive.
