Forest is a lesser-known but intriguing action game for the Atari 2600 that places players in the role of a brave woodcutter struggling to survive in a dangerous, enchanted forest. The story sets the tone early: a witch has cast a dark spell over the forest, turning once-harmless animals into deadly enemies. Your mission is to guide the woodcutter through hostile territory, cut down trees, and earn enough resources to support his family, all while avoiding constant threats. Gameplay begins by pressing the reset button, after which animals immediately start appearing at the bottom of the screen and advancing toward the woodcutter. If any animal touches his legs, the woodcutter is instantly killed and the attempt ends. Adding to the danger, a bird flies overhead, periodically dropping stones. If a stone hits the woodcutter, he becomes immobilized for two seconds, leaving him vulnerable to enemies. Control is handled entirely with the joystick. Moving left or right allows the woodcutter to walk forward or backward through the forest, while pushing up lets him jump over approaching animals. Combat is performed by pressing the fire button while pushing the joystick downward, swinging the axe to destroy most enemies. The snake, however, cannot be killed and must be avoided entirely, forcing players to rely on timing and positioning. The main objective is to move across two forest screens to the right. On the third screen, a large tree appears, marking the core challenge. The woodcutter must chop the tree down by delivering four axe blows on each side, all while animals continue to attack. The player can also climb a short distance up the tree using the joystick, adding another layer of strategy during the chopping sequence. Once the tree is successfully cut down, the game loops back to the forest, but with increased speed and difficulty. Each tree cut raises the challenge, making survival progressively harder. There is also a time limit represented by 5,000 points for each woodcutter. If time runs out, one woodcutter is lost, though the game continues from the same situation. Bonus points are awarded based on how much time remains when the tree is finally chopped down. Forest stands out as a tense and demanding Atari 2600 experience, combining reflex-based action, environmental hazards, and increasing difficulty into a unique survival challenge from the early era of home gaming. #vaultofpixels #atari #atari2600 #forest Playlist: • Atari -- 2600
