The ZeroPM science-policy webinar series will focus on a specific topic of regulatory importance according to the timeline EU Green Deal, with a focus on regulations related to persistent and mobile substances. For our inaugural webinar, Xenia Trier (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Zhanyun Wang (EMPA, Switzerland) will give the background and the status on the roll out of the Safe and Sustaniable by Design (#SSbD) concept, and how this may effect #PMT/#vPvM substances. In 2020, the European Union adopted the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (#CCS), setting ambitious goals to transform the EU's industry towards a more sustainable future and better protecting human and ecosystem health. In particular, the CCS officially introduced the SSbD concept as a means for the systemic transition of the EU's industry. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has recently developed a framework for implementing the SSbD concept, and the European Commission is currently working on developing the SSbD criteria for chemicals. However, in order to fully operationalize the concept, concerted efforts are still needed. For example, one key issue is related on how to assess the safety and sustainability at an early design phase, where the data availability is mostly poor. This webinar aims to present the current development of the SSbD concept within the EU and initiate discussion on the operationalisation of the concept. Xenia Trier is an analytical environmental chemist by training, who for more than 25 years has worked on ways to lower the pressure on human and environmental health of chemicals of concern. Her focus has been two-fold: 1) Developing analysis fit for regulations, including for enforcement/ compliance testing of products and 2) Conceptual development and implementation of chemicals risk governance approaches/policies at the EU and national levels such as Safe and Sustainable by Design (EEA, 2021). Zhanyun Wang – an environmental chemist by training, Dr. Wang's research interests focus primarily on understanding the life cycles and risks of various anthropogenic chemicals in the technosphere and natural environment. He is also very interested in exploring novel and pragmatic approaches to advancing sound chemicals management, enabling a sustainable circular economy, and strengthening the science–policy interface on chemicals and waste.
