Welcome to Bamako- Mali America Music Project's latest music video- is a musical tour through the vibrant capital city of Mali. Sung in Bambara, the lyrics honor Bamako’s history, culture, and the warmth of its people. Co-written by Papa Zani Diabaté and Lindsey Schust- of the Mali America Music Project blending traditional Malian musical roots with a contemporary, cross-cultural sound. Lindsey Schust (vocals in Bambara and English) is a singer-songwriter, percussionist, and cross-cultural music advocate. She began studying African drumming as a child, when her parents built large ashiko drums for the legendary Babatunde Olatunji, who later became her mentor and godfather. Lindsey grew up immersed in African music, surrounded by African musicians that her family invited to perform in rural New Hampshire. Traditional and popular African music continues to inspire her songwriting across genres—from salsa to country. Papa Zani Diabaté (guitar and djembe) comes from a distinguished musical lineage known as the djeli (griot). He is the only son of the late Zani Diabaté of the Super Djata Band. Papa Zani’s playing carries his father’s signature pentatonic style, earning Zani Diabaté the nickname “the Jimi Hendrix of Mali.” Guest vocalist Alou Sangaré (Bambara vocals) also comes from a strong musical lineage—his father was a lead singer of the Super Djata Band. Lindsey Schust and Papa Zani’s friendship began in the late 1990s when Papa Zani was touring in the US. Today, Lindsey is based in New England, and Papa Zani in Bamako. The two reconnected online in 2022 to create the Mali America Music Project—a transatlantic collaboration blending traditional Malian music with modern influences such as salsa, blues, reggae, and jazz. This music honors the legacies of Zani Diabaté, Babatunde Olatunji, and the deep traditions of Malian music. Through collaboration, friendship, and creative partnership, the Mali America Music Project aims to promote peace and understanding across cultures, races, and countries. The project included women from the village of Wancoro, Mali- a village that Papa Zani has visited for many years. These women supported the project by performing in the first video "Moussow Women". Mali America Music then helped raise funds for the women’s community garden. 🔗 Learn more: www.maliamericamusic.com Additional Credits Issouf Djire – bass guitar Baba Simaga – keyboards, programming, recording & mixing Gerry Putnam – Cedar House Sound & mastering
