Two forces push this. First, by nature, top performers don't fit into the norm. Second, it’s in people's DNA to compare themselves with others. When they don't like what they see, that’s the problem. It happens easily. So, they feel compelled to resolve this in their minds. That’s called rationalizing a cognitive dissonance. In the end, they conclude something’s wrong with the top performer. Co-workers begin to talk among themselves. They all suffer from the same dissonance. All they need now is something, anything to rationalize their feelings. Then, individually, they complain to the boss. Too many times though, the boss falls for this negativity. First, it happens because the true value of a star employee is often unclear and understated. Second, it’s tough to see how so many employees can be wrong. Yet, they are.
