Gideon – From Fearful Faith To Tested Obedience Gideon lived during a time when Israel was oppressed by the Midianites because they had sinned against God (Judges 6:1). The people were afraid and hiding. Gideon himself was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the enemy (Judges 6:11). When the Angel of the Lord appeared, He called Gideon a “mighty man of valor” (Judges 6:12). Gideon did not feel brave. He felt small and weak (Judges 6:15). God chose Gideon not because he was strong, but because God is powerful. The Lord reduced Gideon’s army from 32,000 men to only 300, so that Israel would not boast and say, “My own hand has saved me” (Judges 7:2). With trumpets and torches, God defeated a great army (Judges 7:20–22). The victory clearly came from God alone. Hebrews 11:32 includes Gideon among the people of faith. This story shows that salvation is by God’s power, not human strength (Psalm 20:7; Ephesians 2:8–9). God often uses weak people so that all glory belongs to Him (2 Corinthians 12:9). Gideon’s life teaches us that faith may begin with fear, but it must grow into obedience. God patiently strengthened Gideon, even giving him signs when he was afraid (Judges 6:36–40).
