BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color) individuals are underrepresented at all levels of the field of psychology in the United States. This dearth of diversity has not only resulted in an impoverished and incomplete picture of traditionally marginalized racial and ethnic groups, but it has also led to an impoverished view of what normative human behavior looks like. As a result, it is imperative that the field of psychology diversify at all levels in equitable and inclusive ways. This presentation will provide a rationale for adopting the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as underlying values in the advancement of psychology as a field. In addition, Dr. Sellers will utilize existing scholarship on DEI-related principles and his own personal experiences as a chair of a leading psychology department and a university Chief Diversity Officer to share insights into how psychology can be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. __________________________________ The American Psychological Association is the leading scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, with more than 146,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants and students as its members.
