St Abbs, a fishing village just north of Eyemouth and Berwick-Upon-Tweed came out on top of those. The harbour with its rocky outcrops just outside looked stunning with Coldingham Bay nearby, offering a beach option, so when we decided to proceed with the hike, I made a mental note of St Abbs as a good destination for a future trip. So a couple of months later it was my and Deb’s anniversary and we decided to make a trip to St Abbs the focus of that day. It didn’t disappoint. From walking round and watching the activities of the fishermen in the working harbour, crossing the narrow sea wall out to one of the rocky islands to enjoying the cafes and shopping at a local trader’s unique shop, we loved St Abbs and found what appeared to be a nice balance between tourism and traditional industry, judging by the friendliness of the locals. At least that was our impression. Coldingham Bay was a lovely beach which seems to be partly dedicated to surfing and despite it being quite a windy day (so no drone footage from here or St Abbs), the sea conditions were not great for surfing when we visited. On the way we had passed a sign for Hume Castle, so with better weather conditions forecast, we visited that the following day and got some drone footage before starting the journey home. Hume Castle is a folly, so not a real castle, though it is built on the site of a medieval castle, some remains of which can be seen inside the folly. It was built by Hugh Hume-Campbell in the 18th century. Modern historians would thoroughly disapprove of building such a monument on top of an existing site, as this must make any excavation of the original castle more difficult or impossible. The location overlooking Hume village and the 360 views of the Borders region from the curtain walls are well worth experiencing, however. I hope you enjoy the video.
