JVKE - This Is What Losing Someone Feels Like | Dance Choreography by Dre Lakin SUBSCRIBE - / drelakin INSTAGRAM - / drechristine WEBSITE - https://www.drelakin.com BOOK WEBSITE - https://damagecontrolfordancers.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHOREOGRAPHY | Dre Lakin This class and choreography are dedicated to Stephen tWitch Boss & Allison Holker, for reasons very personal. I will do my best to put it all into words. There are so many feelings I am still processing from this class on Wednesday night, as it was quite possibly one of the most important, raw, emotional, healing, human, and needed classes I've ever taught. From the moment the world learned about his passing, I knew I wanted to dedicate my next class to him, but not for reasons one might assume. From the outside looking in, what looks perfect, isn't, and this loss that the entire dance community felt, hit closer to home than I ever could have imagined. Unknowingly, the same day he struggled, so did I, and I'd never been in that dark of a place. I had it all planned out and did not see how I could carry the pain anymore. But when my mentor reached out after noticing things I was was posting on social media seemed off, that sudden intervention became my lifeline. She's the only reason I'm still here. One message stopped me in my tracks. The next morning, along with the rest of the world, I was in shock and disbelief to hear about what happened, and it gutted me to know that someone so beautiful could have also felt that pain. You truly never know what someone is facing, and this resonated with and hit me unbelievably hard. I felt guilty in a survivor's guilt kind of way, didn't accept it as reality at first, was in total denial, but also knew I wanted to always honor his light through dance if I was to keep going, because no matter what, it didn't feel fair that he wasn't here anymore, but I was. As artists, often times the way we give back, is through creating. When the opportunity to give a free community class presented itself at I-Inspire Dance Studios in Atlanta, I immediately began my search for music. After going through three songs and six combos, nothing was working. A little defeated but determined to try again in the morning, I went to bed last Friday night and woke suddenly in the early morning hours. I saw a notification that JVKE's new song - This Is What Losing Someone Feels Like- had just dropped, and immediately got my headphones to feel the full experience of whatever masterpiece was coming. Within seconds, I knew the familiar creative charge that I felt with Golden Hour was taking over, I looked at the clock, it said 2:22am, and I began weeping at the divine perfection of His timing. I knew this was the one and started making moves immediately, through tears. I just wanted to do it justice, and in the flow, you never know if you are. You just follow the instincts and hope for the best. JVKE's music makes it effortless for me to get into the flow, and it pushes me to go to new places with my choreographic voice. I've honestly never felt anything like it. I told the dancers right before we filmed, I had no idea what was going to come out of me after this combo, and I meant it. I remember looking at Ania right before we started, shrugging my shoulders as if to say, here goes nothing. I can honestly say I've never danced more vulnerable in my entire life. This moment guts me and heals me all at once. The dancers learned this in thirty minutes, each went on their own raw and emotional journey, and to honor all that this night was, I am keeping every human moment in this video, because we are human beings first, and YOU MATTER. YOU ARE ENOUGH. I LOVE YOU. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Please reach out to someone if anything in your heart or mind is hurting, because sometimes one message can make all the difference. I know it did for me, so I feel responsible in a way, to talk about mental health now. I hope you'll watch this to the very end, because the light is always at the end of the tunnel. So much love & gratitude to all who are supporting my journey! It means the world to me! Please SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW!
