Last year, I visited Zhuhai—often called China’s happiest city—and had one of the worst travel experiences of my life. From traffic jams and a street fight to getting severe food poisoning from undercooked oysters, I left with a strong aversion to the city. But maybe it wasn’t Zhuhai’s fault. Maybe it was just bad luck. In this video, I return to Zhuhai to give it a second chance. We start at the Zhuhai Museum, where I learn about the city’s transformation—from a quiet fishing region to a hub of innovation in aviation, green energy, and cross-border infrastructure. We then explore Beishan Village (北山大院), a 1,000-year-old neighborhood where ancient architecture meets modern art, boutique shops, and incredible food. Nearby, we visit the stunning Jinwan Civic Art Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, and wrap up with a look at how massive shopping malls serve as the heart of suburban life in modern China—offering far more food and lifestyle options than malls in the U.S. This is a story of second chances, changing perspectives, and discovering what makes a city truly livable.
