When it comes to classic live-action kids' shows, few are as fondly remembered as Sky King (1951). It was a sort of modernized Western, only instead of riding a horse the hero flew a plane. Schuyler King was a rancher bringing up niece Penny (an accomplished pilot herself) and nephew Clipper. After a run on radio the show moved to tv with Kirby Grant as 'Sky' and Gloria Winters as Penny. Many pilots, even a few astronauts, have cited 'Sky King' as an inspiration for their careers. Sky's first 'Songbird' was a Cessna T-50 Bobcat, replaced with a 310B. The 1951 season ran on Sunday afternoons on NBC, and was rerun on ABC both on Saturday mornings and in primetime. Starting in 1955 new episodes were produced for syndication; years later CBS was rerun those, making Sky King one of the few shows to air on all three networks. Originally sponsored by Derby Foods, Nabisco took over in later seasons. They eventually sold the show to Kirby Grant and it is still owned by Sky King Productions whose website you can visit here - https://www.skyking.com 0:00 Opening titles and sponsor plug, Derby Foods. 0:51 Detecto microscope. 2:00 End credits. The library track used to close the show is the same theme heard on 'Death Valley Days': '20 Mule Team' by Herb Taylor and Milt Raskin. It's unclear if it was used during original first-season showings or only for repeats. 2:42 Opening titles and sponsor plug, Nabisco. 3:42 End credits and sponsor plug. The classicthemes site credits Paul Sawtell and Bert Shefter for the music (we recently met them via 'Code 3'). Hat-tip to YouTuber Rob Word original poster of some of the clips included here.
